Slade Hat-Trick lifts VCU 3-2 in OT v. Fordham

Slade Hat-Trick lifts VCU 3-2 in OT v. Fordham

Sports Backers hosted a first place battle of the Rams as VCU took on Fordham in an Atlantic 10 conference match Thursday night. Both teams entered the contest with 6 points each and looked to stay near the top of the A-10 table.

The opening minutes featured a stalemate between the Rams. VCU and Fordham attempted to control the tempo with neither having an advantage. Kelly Graves, Julia Suarez and Kailyn Slade helped create chances for VCU but no luck finding a goal.

VCU almost found the back of the net in the 14’ off the VCU corner kick sent by Amanda Hallesjo to Tori Burress for a header that was saved by Fordham’s goalkeeper Megan Fitzgerald.

Sharon Wojcik made an impact on the match for VCU with her footwork, defending and strikes. Wojcik’s best chance in the first half was a shot from the left corner of the 18 that was spun towards the right upper 90 that Fitzgerald barely got a glove on to make the save.

Fordham was able to take the lead into half-time as Brianna Blunck sent a corner kick towards Kristina Maksuti who headed in her fourth goal of the season in the 31’ and gave Fordham a 0-1 lead heading into the locker room.

In the 2nd half, VCU’s Kailyn Slade took over the match and the scoresheet. Slade found the equalizer VCU needed in the 49’ after heading in Hallesjo’s corner kick into the back of the net to tie it 1-1. After that goal, VCU looked more confident on the pitch and played not satisfied with the draw; they wanted all 3 points.

Fordham answered back with another goal coming from Jessica Widmann off the cross sent from Caitlin Leen to give a 1-2 lead in favor of Fordham at the 57’ mark.

When all hope seemed lost as time was running out, Slade once again buried another Black & Gold equalizer as Suarez sent a long ground pass from the right side of the box to Slade that just gets by Fitzgerald to level the match at 2-2.

Only 5 minutes of extra time was needed to decide the victor. Hallesjo took the VCU free kick in the 95’ and found Slade who delivered a powerful header into the net for the game winner and a hat-trick for Slade. The team rushed to Slade with cheers and hugs in celebration as VCU defeats Fordham 3-2 in a thrilling battle of the Rams to claim all 3 points at Sports Backers.

VCU’s next match will be at Sports Backers on Sunday afternoon as they take on Dayton. Kick-Off scheduled for 1 PM.
