PREVIEW: VCU vs. High Point

PREVIEW: VCU vs. High Point

Friday Night Futbol is just around the corner at Sports Backers. During this doubleheader on the pitch featuring the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University, Women’s Soccer will take on High Point University in search of their second win of the season.

State Of The Rams

VCU stands at 1-1 with the 2018 season fully underway. One opponent that the Panthers and Rams have in common is UNCW and the Seahawks captured victories in both contests. After that 1-3 snag in the season opener, VCU bounced back versus Charlotte with 1-0 win in OT of the golden boot of Rachel Hardy.

With two matches under their belt, VCU has great potential at key positions on the pitch. Cici Fox and Idelys Vazquez added extra firepower at the forward position which is still firing shots at a high rate from last season. Alongside Rachel Hardy are Kimberly Ito and Samantha Jerabek that makeup VCU’s workhorses in midfield and their chemistry are on full display.

The defense was under the microscope at first but quickly recovered. Audrey Sanderson is still the woman in goal for the Black & Gold while keeping her back line informed. There are some tough gems in the rough for VCU and are close to shining as the season continues.

State of HPU

High Point University comes up to RVA at 1-1 overall. Their season started well with a 4-0 home win over Appalachian State then UNCW knocked the Panthers down 0-2 in Wilmington, North Carolina. In that UNCW match, High Point was playing with 10 players for 54 minutes.

The Panthers have a youthful core with 15 freshmen on the roster. High Point does have experience in the ranks including junior defender Brie Deel and senior goalkeepers Emily Lyon and Charlotte Kennedy. At this point of the season, there is still plenty of learning while playing the game and High Point is no exception.

Don’t let these ladies fool you; these Panthers can play some soccer. Improvements can be made on the offensive side but High Point has a pretty stingy defense. Head coach Brandi Fontaine gave her team praise on their response being down a man against UNCW.

Get Ready For The Next Battle

This will be the third time VCU and High Point do battle. Their last contest was back in 2012 where it ended in a 1-1 draw after double OT at Sports Backers. High Point is 0-1-1 all-time against the Rams. The next chapter goes down at 7:30 pm on Friday, August 24th at Sports Backers Stadium.

Mark graduated from VCU in 2014 with a major in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology. He started as a fan of the Black & Gold in the stands his freshman year. Mark was known as "Kazie" for his charismatic fandom with the VCU's student organization the Rowdy Rams. While at VCU he gained experience in sports media with WVCW on a sports radio show called Rowdy Radio. Following graduation, Mark continued crafting his social media skills with the Richmond Kickers while also handling VCU coverage. He is a true fan of the Rams and vocally passionate on and off camera. After the final whistle, you can probably find him at local RVA bar or brewery enjoying a drink and conversation.
