#4 VCU was held down defensively in a 0-1 defeat at the hands of #5 Fordham. Fordham avenged their loss at Sports Backers back in October to move on to the Semi-Finals of the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship where they will play #8 George Mason.
At the opening whistle, VCU looked to have everything in control thanks to Kelly Graves, Kailyn Slade and Julia Suarez putting immediate pressure on Fordham’s back 4. Early corner kicks and strikes from Suarez followed by Graves did not find the back of the net but with this attack it looked as if one would soon.
Fordham was able to flip the script with a goal in the 15′ minute thanks to a through ball from Natalie Sims towards Brooke Salmon just outside the 18 and Sims sent it by Emma Kruse into the net for the lone goal of the contest.
From that moment on Fordham held a defensive grip on VCU. Limiting the Black & Gold to just six shots on the day and only two of the six were on target. Possession was on VCU’s side yet they just couldn’t do anything with it offensively in the match.
Emma Kruse was seen playing sweeper keeper in the 2nd half as VCU tried to get something going towards finding the equalizer but to no avail. The final whistle blew at Alumni Soccer Stadium confirming that the 2nd Battle of the Rams claimed victory for #5 Fordham.
