An Inviting Sweep: Rams Defeat Blue Raiders 3-0

VCU Volleyball had a good start to their VCU Invitational Friday night at Siegel Center. The Rams were able to sweep the Blue Raiders while also adding a member to an exclusive VCU Volleyball club in the process.

The opening set was won by the Black & Gold 25-20. Attacking errors by MTSU along with good blocking by the VCU duo of Julia Adler and Jasmin Sneed put the Rams ahead early. The Blue Raiders were able to regain ground until Sahbria McLetchie got in the groove of VCU’s offense towards winning Set 1.

Set 2 was a more even contest out of the gate. Diamond Boxley sparked giving VCU some breathing room while Rebekah Strange kept digging the Rams out on defense. A few crucial errors on the Blue Raiders down the stretch was all she wrote as VCU took a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

In the 3rd set, MTSU was able to score a 16-12 lead over VCU. The Blue Raiders continued attacking the net while VCU started to force more errors as MTSU looked to force a 4th set. Vicky Giommarni was a key factor late with 11 total kills as VCU got back to business. Extra volleyball was needed with a 24-24 draw as the Rams held strong defensively to win 28-26 and secure the 3-0 sweep over Middle Tennessee State.

Rebekah Strange racked up 19 digs on the night and became the newest member of the VCU 1,000 Digs Club.

VCU Volleyball is back in action on Saturday, September 17th as they take on Morgan State at noon followed by Liberty at 5 PM. Both matches will be hosted inside the Siegel Center.
