Senior Revenge: #8 VCU Blasts #1 GW 4-0

Senior Revenge: #8 VCU Blasts #1 GW 4-0

Revenge is sweet as VCU avenge their bittersweet Senior Night with a 4-0 beatdown over #1 George Washington in the A-10 Men’s Soccer Quarterfinals Thursday afternoon. From the opening to the final whistle, the Rams held control of the Colonials for 90 minutes and lit up the scoreboard at George Mason Stadium.

VCU looked to attack early and often upon kick-off. The Rams were rewarded with a dangerous free kick opportunity after GW’s Matthew Scott had a handful of Dennis Castillo’s jersey and was a shown a Yellow Card for his actions. Castillo sent the kick just wide of the net four minutes into the match.

The Rams had their foot on the gas for the remainder of the half. Juniors Dakota Barnathan and Jorge Herranz created chances from midfield towards VCU forwards who were hungry for that opening goal.

VCU’s hunger was nourished with back to back goals. Sophomore Rafael Andrade Santos opened the festivities in the 35th with a beauty of a strike near the 18 that spun into the right upper 90 of the net. A minute later, Herranz was able to finish off an Eli Lockaby cross with a knuckle ball straight pass the keeper to double VCU’s lead before halftime.

GW attempted to break through VCU’s defense and had no luck. Castillo showed why he won A-10 Defensive Player of the Year with numerous blocks on the frustrated Colonials. Junior Juan Fajardo Ortiz and sophomore RJ Roberts were on their game playing in the back 4 for VCU and goalkeeper Pierre Gardan kept the clean sheet with 4 saves on the day.

Things got worse for the Colonials as senior Eddie Painter was sent off in the 82’ minute after receiving a red card before Christian Lawal attempted the GW free kick. VCU opened the floodgates with another round of back to back goals from Luc Fatton in the 85’ minute followed by Herranz netting in his 2nd goal of the match a minute later for the explanation point.

A dominate performance to open post-season play as VCU eliminates top seed George Washington to move on to the A-10 Semi-Finals.

#8 VCU await the winner of #4 Fordham and #5 Massachusetts in the other A-10 Quarterfinal. Kick-Off for the A-10 Men’s Soccer Semi-Final is set for Friday, November 13th at 5 PM in George Mason Stadium.
