Rams Stare Down Hoyas in Double OT Draw

Rams Stare Down Hoyas in Double OT Draw

VCU came into the third of four consecutive home games with their first 2 wins and clean sheets of the 2015-2016 season.  The Rams defeated Hartford 2-0 and followed up with a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville over the weekend.  Head Coach Dave Giffard scheduled a challenging slate for his team facing a host of pre-season ranked opponents including the Georgetown Hoyas who came into the match with a 2-2-1 record.  The Hoyas were also victorious in their previous 2 games with a 3-1 win over UCLA and a 5-2 decision over Radford.

The first 36 minutes were spent in a stalemate as both teams fought for opportunities on offense.  Dennis Castillo took the first chance for the Rams in the 17th minute but the shot went high.  The Hoyas didn’t get their first shot until the 29th minute when Georgetown’s Keegan Rosenberry’s attempt was thwarted by VCU goal keeper Pierre Gardan.  The Hoyas fired their next attempts in rapid succession with 3 more unsuccessful chances from Seiler, Muyl, and Campbell in the 30th, 32nd, and 34th minutes respectively.  Georgetown finally found the back of the net on Muyl’s second attempt off an assist from Ledder in the 37th minute.  Again Georgetown began firing additional attacks adding 3 additional chances in the 38th minute with 2 more saves from VCU keeper Pierre Gardan.  The Rams successfully held off the remaining attempts from the Hoyas who took 10 shots (4 on goal) while VCU took only 3 shots (2 on goal).  Georgetown maintained a 1-0 lead at the end of the half.

Coming into the second half VCU turned up the offensive energy and went after the equalizer which they successfully completed on their second shot attempt.  Rafa Andrade Santos hit the back of the net with the help of a combined assist from Ivan Sakou and RJ Roberts and the Rams tied it up in the 51st minute.  The Hoyas applied some offensive pressure of their own and took back the advantage in the 59th minute off a goal from Arun Basuljevic who garnered the assist from their first scorer Muyl. Georgetown took hold of a 2-1 lead and the chase continued.  VCU went on the hunt for another equalizer while trying to keep Georgetown from adding another goal and the Hoyas went on the hunt to secure a win.  With 5 minutes to go both teams had 5 shots with 3 on goal a piece.  Castillo went just wide in the 86th minute but it was too soon too count the Rams out because they came down the stretch to deliver the second equalizer of the night as Santos found Dakota Barnathan in the 87th minute.  VCU attempted 1 more shot that was saved by Georgetown goal keeper JT Marcinkowski before the end of regulation.

Then the teams prepared for another battle in overtime.  The Hoyas went for an early golden goal off a shot from Brett Campbell that went just wide in the 93rd minute but neither team was successful in closing it out during the first overtime.  With just 10 minutes to score for a team to claim victory the Hoyas were again first to strike on offense with 2 quick shots by  Basuljevic (blocked) and Allen (wide) in the 101st minute.  The Rams countered with an attempt of their own by Kargbo in the 104th minute that went wide.  As the clock ticked down Rosenberry took a shot that barely went wide of the post in the 106th minute.  VCU went on a frantic offensive attack in the last minute shooting one high over the post and the Hoyas returned with a counter but ultimately neither achieved that golden goal and the 110 minutes concluded with a 2-2 draw.
