The VCU men’s soccer team did not disappoint,  with a shut out of the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in a 3-0 win in their season opener.  The Rams played a very aggressive offense at a relatively high intensity all night, while the Knights played rather defensively and failed to rally offensively at any point during the game.  In fact, even from the perspective of a newcomer to the sport, VCU was clearly using a different playbook than the opposition in both style and pace.

VCU didn’t leave fans waiting long.  The first goal of the night came just 7 minutes in from #17 Jose Manel with the assist going to #10 Mario Herrera Meraz. Even though there was a lot of action the remaining 38 minutes this was the sole goal of the first half.  The second goal came even faster in the second half.  Just 4 minutes into play #11 Kharlton Belmar added to the Rams lead moving them to 2-0.  The highlight of the night was a great long range goal from Herrara Meraz in the 70th minute, a moment that had fans on their feet and the Knights looking rather defeated as the chances for a turnaround diminished for FDU.

In a quick follow up to their first regular season game and shut out victory, VCU will return to Sports Backers Stadium on Sunday August 31, 2014.  Their opponent will be East Tennessee State University with kick off around 3:30 pm.
