Coming up for VCU Men’s Soccer is a match against Temple University. Both teams are in similar situations with a roster filled with fresh talent gaining more game-time experience on the pitch and working together to achieve the ultimate goal: Win.
State of the Rams
VCU was able to bounce back after an abysmal season opener against Georgia Southern. (RECAP Right Here! 👋) The Rams took the field in their last match versus Radford and had a different set of results in a 3-0 victory at Sports Backers.
Head coach David Giffard explained post-match that VCU “bounc[ed] back with a more intelligent performance than Friday.” The Rams played with the same energy and pace however their passes and possession overall was much better. More chances rolled towards the Black & Gold and the Rams collected 3 quality goals as their reward along with the win.
Sitting at 1-1 overall, there is plenty of work for the Rams. There is plenty of talent on the pitch for the Black & Gold in various positions. One of the main objectives for this team is chemistry. With talents such as Eli Lockaby to Siad Haji and Fortia Munts, this roster needs more game time to fully evolve into a cohesive squad. Individually these players have the skill and a high work rate; the pondering question is will this be the same from a team aspect or does more time on the clock need to be added?
State of the Owls
Temple University is also working with a roster full of potential in due time for the Owls. Head coach Brian Rowland began his first year at the helm and brought in 17 new players to the roster.
In their first match of the season, the Owls fell to UMBC 0-1 on the road. Coach Rowland explained that Temple “got off track in the second half. Anytime you do not take chances, a team can always find a way to sneak a good goal in.”
This team is full of spunk and youth. Temple can create scoring opportunities however at this point of the season the Owls can’t consistently finish them off. With more time out on the pitch, the Owls can surprise the Rams if given the opportunity. In the American conference, Temple was picked 6th in the conference pre-season rankings.
