VCU Baseball Home Opener 2017 vs ODU


A quadrant of errors cost VCU a win over rival ODU. VCU’s All American came into the game in the 8th inning to stifle a rally from the Monarchs. With a runner on third Donko got out of the inning trailing 3-2. ODU’s lone run in the inning game after an error before Sam came into the game to clean up. The Rams would give themselves a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning. Farrar and Ching hit back to back singles and Dylan Isquirdo drove them in with a double. It looked like Isquirdo’s hit would give VCU the final edge they needed to close out the game. The Rams were perfectly set up to finish the contest with their All- American closer on the mound.

Jared Young led off the inning by hitting a groundball to Paul Witt at short stop, Witt committed an error on the play that allowed Young to reach safely. Young would get bunted to second by Zack Rutherford. With a runner on second and one out Colver Lamb hit a single that scored Young from second, tying the game at 4. Donko would get out of the inning surrendering one unearned run.

The Rams went down in order in the bottom of the 9th, sending the game into extra innings. Donko would stay in the game to pitch the 10th. After getting the first batter to fly out, the closer gave up a base hit to Kyle Battle who advanced to second after a throwing error on Witt. After a single from Bryce Windham, ODU had runners on first and third with one out. VCU just needed one ground ball to get a double play and escape the inning, they got the ground ball put it slipped through the infield, scoring Kyle Battle from third. Like 4 of ODU’s 5 runs, the go ahead run was unearned. Donko got out of the inning with no further damage done.

In the Bottom of the 10th the Rams needed one run to tie the game. Darian Carpenter led off the inning by striking out looking on a questionable call. Logan Farrar came up and made it to first via error on the ODU first baseman who couldn’t handle a hard-hit ground ball from Farrar. Farrar eventually managed to steal second with 2 outs but pinch hitter, Alex Gransback was unable to get a hit. The Rams fell 5-4 in the 10th.

The Rams committed 3 errors from the 8th inning to the 10th. It proved to be too much to overcome in their home debut. VCU will host Fairfield for a three-game series starting on Friday. The Rams are 2-5 early in the season.
