This weekend at the Diamond, VCU Baseball collides with Fordham in their next Atlantic 10 series. Both Rams sit in the top 4 of the conference with the Black & Gold trying to stay ahead alone in first place.
VCU: (25-8 Overall, 8-1 A-10)
VCU smacked La Salle in a dominant 3-0 sweep in Philadelphia. The Rams outscored the Explorers 48-12 on the road including a historic 28-4 shellacking last Sunday. 28 runs were the most VCU batted in this season and hasn’t been done since 2004. (29-2 win vs. Fairleigh Dickinson)
Old Dominion derailed VCU’s 6 game win streak in Norfolk on Tuesday. The Monarchs sprung a 9th inning comeback and scored 2 runs to edge VCU 6-5.
Zac Ching’s road performance led to his first A-10 Player of the Week honor. The VCU senior went to bat 9 times at La Salle and connected on 8 hits. Ching had 7 runs, 3 doubles and a home run against the Explorers.
The Rams are one game ahead of Dayton and Rhode Island in first place at 8-1 in conference play. VCU roams into the weekend winning 5 straight conference games (2 vs. Davidson, 3 at La Salle)
Fordham: (21-13 Overall, 6-3 A-10)
Fordham is in fourth place with a chance to move up the A-10 rankings. The visiting herd from the Bronx has a talented pitching rotation with 5 different Rams picking up weekly A-10 honors. Anthony DiMeglio is the latest Fordham Ram that was named A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Siena took down Fordham in New York 12-0 on Wednesday. Fordham only trailed Siena 4-0 before the Saints scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Saints got the last laugh after falling to Fordham 5-4 in the Bronx the previous week.
Leading the way for Fordham to possible redemption on the mound this weekend is John Stankiewicz. Stankiewicz leads the Atlantic 10 with a 1.02 ERA and has 5 conference wins with 57 strikeouts. VCU’s Conor Gillispie is second in the A-10 with a 1.57 ERA.
Speaking Of Redemption…Rematch!
This battle of the Rams happened only once last season in the 2018 A-10 Baseball Tournament. Fordham defeated VCU 3-2 in the opening round thanks to a late eight-inning run.
VCU’s slugging advantage continues to surge at .545% to lead the conference. Fordham sits at the bottom of the A-10 table in this category at .311%. A battle of VCU’s hitters versus Fordham’s pitching to see which side winds up victorious.
