Post-Season Reward! VCU Field Hockey Makes A-10 Playoffs as #3 Seed

VCU Field Hockey was rewarded for their work this season as the Rams qualified for the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship. The Rams finished conference play at 6-2 in 3 way tie for 2nd place with UMass and Richmond.

The #2, #3 and #4 seeds were broken down by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker among VCU, UMass, and Richmond. The Minutewomen took the #2 seed with defeating both the Rams and Spiders earlier this season. VCU collected the #3 seed with a win over Richmond and a loss to UMass. Richmond rounded the bracket as the #4 seed.

Saint Joseph’s won the Atlantic 10 regular season title and the #1 seed with a 7-1 record during conference play. The Hawks fly into tournament play with a 16-3 overall record.

What A Turnaround!

Head coach Stacey Bean has done wonders for VCU Field Hockey in her first season at the realm. The Rams currently sit at 14-5 overall; 14 wins are the most for this program since 1992. In a complete 360, the Black & Gold turned last year’s 7-11 finish in the A-10 into 6-2 and a post-season birth.

VCU brings the 2nd best scoring offense into the A-10 tournament; 54 total goals this season overall for the Rams and 26 of those were scored during conference play. Emily McNamara leads the A-10 in goals (21), points (51) and shots (127).

Chessa Kownurko has the 3rd best Goals Against Average (GAA) at 1.35 with 65 saves and 6 shutouts for the Rams. As a team, VCU averaged the third best GAA at 1.38.

A Rematch in the Semi-Finals

Awaiting the Rams in the A-10 Semi-Final is #2 Massachusetts. The Minutewomen enter the tournament as the two-time defending champion in search of the triple. UMass has won the A-10 Field Hockey Championship 7 times since 2007. VCU fell to Massachusetts 4-2 back on October 6th at UMass.

VCU enters tournament play on a 4 game winning streak. 3 of those 4 contests were A-10 matches where the Rams outscored their opponents 15-4.

The Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship will take place at Galdchuk Sports Complex in Amherst, Massachusetts. #2 UMass vs. #3 VCU is scheduled for 2 PM start on Friday, November 3rd.

Mark graduated from VCU in 2014 with a major in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology. He started as a fan of the Black & Gold in the stands his freshman year. Mark was known as “Kazie” for his charismatic fandom with the VCU’s student organization the Rowdy Rams. While at VCU he gained experience in sports media with WVCW on a sports radio show called Rowdy Radio. Following graduation, Mark continued crafting his social media skills with the Richmond Kickers while also handling VCU coverage. He is a true fan of the Rams and vocally passionate on and off camera. After the final whistle, you can probably find him at local RVA bar or brewery enjoying a drink and conversation.
