Game 7: 2016 Atlantic 10 Tournament George Washington v George Mason


Game 7 of the Atlantic 10 WBB tournament and the first game of the quarter finals featured reigning champions the #1 George Washington Colonials and #9 George Mason Patriots.  The first quarter went at rapid fire pace for both teams with the Colonials dominating from beginning to end.  The Patriots battled it out till the end but the top seeded Colonials finished with a 30 advantage in their 78 – 48 victory.

Despite a fast pace Mason struggled to connect from the field shooting at 29.4% during the first quarter.  Kara Wright led the Patriots with 6 and perfect shooting from the paint and the line.  The Colonials started strong with 43.8% shooting and Caira Washington led GW with 7 points connecting on 3-3 in the field and 1-2 from the line.  The Colonials led 19-12 at the buzzer.

The return of Jonquel Jones was a bonus for the Colonials and she added five rebounds and 5 points during the second quarter.  Washington continued to lead scoring for GW as did Wright for Mason.  The Colonials extended their lead into double digits before halftime and were up 40-25.

The Colonials stopped Wright in the third quarter and Mason had to spread out their scoring.  GW continued the offensive attack and out rebounded and scored Mason extending the lead to 22 ending 63 – 41.

The fourth quarter the Colonials went on a 12-2 run and were up 75-43 with 3:11 remaining.  The Patriots were able to add another 5 points before the Colonials claimed a definitive 78-48 victory.

Caira Washington led GW with a double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Kelli Prange added 14 points, followed by Jonquel Jones and Brianna Cummings with 11 each.  Mason was led by Kara Wright and Kristi Mokube who scored 12 points and added 6 rebounds each.

The #1 George Washington Colonials will play #5 VCU Rams on 3/5/16 in game 1 of the semi finals.
