After a week off the pitch, the VCU Rams (4-2-2) faced the Dayton Flyers (5-4-1) to open up the Atlantic 10 season. After 110 minutes, both teams fought to a 0-0 draw at Sportsbackers Stadium. For the Rams, it was their second straight draw on their home turf.
While the statistics says the Rams were the aggressors during the match, it was fairly even in the first 90 minutes. The Rams attempted more shots 12-10, the Rams would not completely takeover the match until extra time. VCU fired 12 shots within the final 20 minutes, but were unable to put the ball past Flyers goalkeeper, Kaelyn Johns. Johns racked up 10 saves in the match. VCU’s Lyndsey Gutzmer almost ended the game in the 97th minute, but the ball hit off the crossbar. Audrey Sanderson racked up four saves in the match for the Black and Gold while notching her fourth clean sheet of 2017.
VCU will hit the road for the next couple of week as they will face the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday and the Duquesne Dukes on Thursday.
