Heartbreak vs. CofC, Rams defeated in Extra Time

VCU looking to bounce from defeat vs. Marshall last Sunday as they took on the College of Charleston in a Friday night showdown at Sports Backers in a thrilling display which ended in heartbreak for the Rams.

The first 45 minutes had action from start to finish as VCU committed with high pressure on defense which lead to a vicious attack on offense. Kelly Graves and Julia Suarez connecting on multiple opportunities during the half but none were able to find the back of the net. A close opportunity for the Rams on goal came in the 23’ with Suarez crossing to Graves in the box for a header that just went over the goal.

College of Charleston struggled in the opening minutes with VCU’s pressure but were able to land an attack of their own in the 24’ as Sarah Blakely took a strike with Emma Kruse out of position sending it over her and bouncing back off the cross-bar.

More of the same took place in the 2nd half as VCU and Charleston kept attacking in hopes of getting that go-ahead goal. Charleston’s best chance came near the end of regulation in the 89’ as Jessica Schifer got thru VCU’s defense leading to a 1 on 1 chance against Kruise. Schifer got a shot off pass Kruse and just wide the post as regulation ended.

Extra Time started and quickly ended in the 97’ as Jessica Schifer got another 1 on 1 opportunity vs. Kruse and this time she found the back of the net to give Charleston a 0-1 victory over the Rams.

VCU’s next match takes place at Sports Backers where they will be take on James Madison. Kick-off is set for 7:30 PM.
